Macy’s “Holiday Cookies”

The last Third Thursday cooking series of 2013 hosted by Macy’s and Chat Chow TV ended on a sweet note as Andrew Gonzalez from Night Owl Cookie Co. taught the crowd how to make his unique gingerbread cookies.

To start, he creamed together unsalted butter with brown sugar for two minutes until light and fluffy. While that was mixing he mixed together the dry ingredients which included flour, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and his secret ingredient – cocoa powder. Gonzalez told the crowd that he preferred the flavor profile of the cocoa powder and used it instead of cloves and allspice which made the cookies too spicy in his opinion.

Once the butter and sugar were creamed, Gonzalez added molasses and a room temperature egg to the wet mix and then combined all the ingredients together. Before putting the cookies into the oven he rolled them into golf-sized balls and dipped them in sugar to add some crunch to the cookie. Before the crowd got to try the cookies, Gonzalez topped them with sugar glaze for the final sweet touch.

During the cooking demo, Gonzalez shared with the crowd how the Night Owl Cookie Co. came about. The idea for the company first began when Gonzalez was in college. He was competing in a local business school competition and submitted his idea for the cookie company. The idea impressed the judges so much he decided to make the company a reality after college.

Night Owl Cookie Co. carries 25 different flavors of cookies from the basic, like chocolate chip cookies, to the more unique, such as cookies made with pretzels or Fruity Pebbles. All the cookies are made fresh to order and can be delivered until 2 a.m. any night of the week.
